10 Reasons to ROAM: A compelling retreat countdown #5

Writer's picture: Miriam HansonMiriam Hanson

The Itinerary: Part 1 (Friday, March 21st - Sunday, March 23rd)

When the rubber hits the road, what happens at the Roatan ROAM yoga retreat? Well, besides the mat practice of yoga, of course, which will be offered twice a day. See below for what kind of mat practices we have planned.*

But, what else, inquiring minds want to know? Here is a day-by-day snapshot of the first three days of the week.

Arrive on Friday, March 21st at 2:30pm - Traveling on the Vernal Equinox!

Since we are all on the same flight, we can move swiftly together through the airport. Awaiting us is Paddle Shack Steve, who will be our driver for the whole week. Steve is gregarious, chatty and a ton of fun. He will first take us by the major grocery store. Our rooms have kitchenettes, so you will have the option to purchase snacks and drinks to have in your room. He will take us to Upachaya, our resort, to settle in and freshen up, and then pick us up a few hours later, to head into West End Village, where we will enjoy a spectacular sunset at the local palapa (beach hut) with a tropical mocktail (on us) and an option to take a little SUP jaunt out into the bay (also on us). Then, we will have a wander around the town, and get dinner. When we are ready to go home, he'll be waiting!

Saturday, March 22nd

Wake up at.....WHENEVER YOU WANT!

Everyday, breakfast is from 8:30-9:30. Feel free to join us for a mat practice before that...or sleep in! All of our meals are prepared by Supy, our mamacita, who will adopt us for the week and accommodate our interests in her meal preparations. After breakfast, Steve will come pick us up to take us to a Cacao Factory. Honduras is known for its incredibly pure cacao, grown in the humid jungly steep hillsides of the mainland, often in tandem with coffee plants. We will visit a cacao factory where we will choose seasonal cacao to prepare for our Equinox Cacao Ceremony that afternoon.

We return for lunch and siesta - an authentic Central American pasttime!

That afternoon, we will gather for our Equinox Cacao Ceremony. Sipping the sacred cacao in the place of its harvesting, we will connect with the heart-expanding energy of this amazing plant, and collect around a ritual of self-reflection and connection.

Kate and Miriam will wow you with fresh tacos for dinner, with fresh hand-made tortillas by Suny.

After dinner, Ms Daine, an island elder, will be coming by to share stories of the history of Roatan (facts and myths), her family's heritage, island stories and island superstitions. She will give you a glimpse into the marvelously complex and dynamic world of Roatan Island.

Sleep in, or come and practice!

After breakfast, Paddle Shack Steve will come pick us up for a full day of adventure. Suny will pack our lunches for us as we are going on a full day trip up the island. We will be visiting villages in the east end of the island, where there is far less tourism. Steve's local guides will take us in their long boats with flat roofs through the mangrove tunnels, where you can experience the nursery that supports the entire reef ecosystem. We will stop in a few spots where we might get a fresh coconut to drink and have a float in spectacular sparkling cerulean waters. We will journey to Pandytown, a historic village of Roatan with its traditional colorful island dwellings and landscaping, for a refreshment at a local palapa. If time allows, we will visit the Iguana Preserve, where a local family harbors hundreds of friendly iguanas from being hunted.

We will stop on our way back at the only local brewery on the island. Built by friends of Miriam's, the brewery has a variety of options (including beer and kombucha) and hosts a lovely makers market where you can shop from skilled local artisans. They have yummy food there, so that will be our dining for the evening.

When we arrive back to Upachaya, you may opt in to a relaxing yin practice to send you off to sleep, grab your book and swing in the hammock, or simply curl into your bed, lulled by the sweet Caribbean breeze.

How can this be only the first three days??

Stay tuned for installment #2, in which we hike through the jungle, take a sunset pontoon cruise, visit the local school that Miriam started, take unbelievable selfies on a perfect beach, and lounge in the infinity pool at the gorgeous home of Jennifer and Steve, Miriam's dearest friends, with drinks and nibbles.

*And about that yoga? We have two yoga mat practice sessions scheduled daily. We will have a morning practice that gets you set for what the day will bring, and an afternoon session that will support you to wind down and integrate. Our yoga sessions will coordinate with our activity levels and will at times energize, uplift, inspire and at other times relax, restore and calm. We have two opportunities to practice yoga with local teachers on the island in different amazing settings: expansive open air decks right on the sea side. All sessions are guided with the intention to support your personal agency and connection to the moment, so that you may choose to end up energized and sweaty, or relaxing blissfully on your mat listening to the ocean lapping at the shore....
